As a SEPTA Station Manager, Elizabeth “Betty” Anderson uses her people and organizational skills to oversee cashiers and carry out a variety of administrative duties. But she pulls on a different skill-set to manage another group of people – fans using SEPTA to get to-and-from games, concerts and other big events at the Sports Complex in South Philadelphia. “I’m almost like a mother,” Anderson said, adding that her nursing background probably also helps in what is sometimes a caretaker-type role.

A year ago February, a call comes out of the blue from a producer at National Geographic Channel expressing an interest in filming an hour-long TV show about the goings-on in SEPTA maintenance shops, subway tunnels and other behind the scene areas the public never sees. Turns out, National Geographic had asked a couple of other large transit agencies and had been turned down flat; potential legal problems, liability problems, labor problems – too much of a hassle. But we thought about it.
